Here's my effort....
We could do nothing
The statue god was made of string
We could do nothing to save him,
Us... the follower moths
Bathed in the water of life
Just took a spark
To set him off
Pagans smiled and someone, somewhere,
Rolled their eyes, “It’s gotto be a hoax”
They said, and firey rags brightened
The ash dark night, and the kippers in
The pond were smoked
And mobile phones buzzed with the jokes
“Woooah, your sect is on fire”
No one knew that this was just the start
And God was smiting all bad works of art
I’ll finish now before this poem is smitten
But first, I offer the words, as lyrics to the girls in Atomic Kitten

heh heh heh. horrible statue. god will get us all, eventually. Wasn't there something about worshiping idols somewhere in the god for dummies manual?
funny - my word is "proiscre", nearly an anagram of proscrire!
Always good to get Atomic Kitten into a poem!
x
That is one heck of a journey!
The idea of God as the supreme art crtitic appeals to me. Though your last three lines have to be the best!
"I’ll finish now before this poem is smitten

Good way to bid adieu to a bizaare statue with an even more bizarre, though not unfitting end.
Dear Poetikat: I TOTALLY love your poem on the Jesus statue which was a half a statue which looked bizarre anyway. An action to the wise is sufficient. As "an Act of God" I would think they'd leave that smouldering awhile. That IS a sign. Maybe God wants a burger king there! Isnt BBQ!
"God was smiting all bad works of art." (He'd be very busy then, wouldn't he?)
I liked this a whole lot!
Adding your link.
Kat
Dear Naimh it t'is you! I Knew it! T'were your fine art not being smoted at all! "I find your poetry wholly and entirely pleasing to my nostrils!" thus Sayeth the Burger King Lord (not me!).
Tks NanU - and proscrire means banish! tks for enlarging my French vocab!
Rachel - do you think they'll get in touch? these pop types can be very stand offish.
Thanks Gwei - glad you enjoyed!
Tks Lorenzo - I think they are rebuilding... I read it somewhere..
Thanks Poetikat - yes it'd be a pretty big job but twas a good place to start.
Thanks Chicco.. am delighted my poetry is so nicely aromatic... there's definitely sense in proposing the site for a barbeque alright!! lol
'Statues on fire, statues on fire, statues on fire, everywhereIgo!'
The Kings Of Leon.
Funny punchline there Nivby in a changeling poem that started off on discovery channel and ended up on the comedy channel.
Yet 'firey rags lit the ash dark night' is very poetic and me likes and think it should be resurrected from the ash of this poem and used in another. Now there's a challenge fer ye!
Thanks TFE! Maybe I'll squeeze it into next week's challenge!!
Hhahaha! Good stuff indeed! And probably correct too! It was a rather hideous thing after all. Nice rhymes.
Laughed out loud. Really did. Atomic Kitten particularly inspired choice.
Ha! This was a rollicking ride. From the start to the finish line, I thoroughly enjoyed myself. (The kippers in the pond were smoked...brilliant!)
Thanks Argent! and Titus - the girls still haven't been in touch yet... and thank you Oak! (perhaps they were even Oak smoked)
Really made me laught out loud!
Thanks Weaver, glad you enjoyed!
How dare you insult Atomic Kitten - the Bob Dylan of the new age. I have all their calendars.
Great bit of fun Niamh
