This evening and other stories

So this evening I'm going to read some poems out in Chapters bookshop, on the theme of Moonlight, organised by the fabulous 7 towers, with some very fine acts appearing alongside. I'm looking forward to it. Alot actually. There's a few I haven't heard before, and some I haven't had a chance to hear for a long time. Show starts at 6.30 - more info here
I've never read out loud in a book shop before. Should be good.

In doggie news. The dog has discovered underwear, not as a thing to wear, but as a thing to chew. You realise discretion forbids pictures but suffice it to say she goes for bright colours and interesting textures. She also recently almost died because of queen cakes (buns for anyone who doesn't understand queen cakes- actually let me know who does and doesn't understand queen cakes, a geographical survey, it'd be interesting). Anyway - we were down in Rosland, she was hanging out in the utility room (let me know whether you understand utility room) because a visitor was dog nervous. We heard a bang. I went out. She was choking. The top of a queen cake visibly holding her jaws wide apart constricting her breath. I removed it, as you do, (she's very good at letting you take things out of her mouth actually) anyway - she was still gasping for air. Yes there was another queen cake behind the first queen cake. She had em kind of stacked from her stomach up it seemed. Anyway, she's alright now, you'll be delighted to hear.
See you all at chapters this evening then... I expect all 48 of you to be there dressed as moons.

the reading sounds like something that will be fun for you. Good luck and I hope you find it enjoyable. I didn't understand queen cakes- so thanks for the help on that. :)

No queen cakes here - they sound like they should have icing on them though... I think I understand utility room - is it kind of like a mud room? or a laundry room? or the room where the hot water heater resides? Except - why would there be queen cakes in there? Hmmm - pantry?

I must agree with The Bug - why were there cakes in the utility room?? Surely dirty laundry and cakes shouldn't be mixed?? Btw - queen cakes? Must be a Cork thing, are they the same as Fairy Cakes?

I've never heard of queen cakes (I suppose that makes me a misogynist). Do they change to king cakes during times of a male monarch?

Thanks Summer, glad to have helped, and yes hopefully it will be good, I plan to dress as moonlight...
Yes Bug you've got the utility pretty much down, but it is sometimes (if kept at very high standards of cleanliness) used as a sort of pantry.
Oub - the cakes are very similar to your fairy cakes, as far as I know. Interesting... seems it's pretty localised then.
Ah Dead Acorn... did that mean anonymous person scare you? (And why is that word per"son" anyway? and not per"daughter") No fear of you being a misogynist (and why isn't that word "mister"ogynist) I think, Indy would have taken care of you long ago if there was any doubt
:-)
Thanks for contributing to my world survey of awareness of the cakes known as queen

You'd get a disease if you left food in my utility room - but that probably says more about me than the room.

We should henceforth use the term per'sibling' instead of per'son' just in case someone is like, insanely super sensitive out there...

I've done that a few times now ith different cakes and biscuits, quite often with the wrappers still on.Hope the Chapter and verse went well, I was almost there but had to leave Dubland at 5.35 precisely.

Maybe it's a pantry and I just thought it was a utility, I don't know. Actually it should be per"child" - apologies for the misleading earlier information.
Ah TFE - yes the wrappers were still firmly attached alright. Pity you missed chapters, I did go as moonlight, twas good fun.

Yay! Hope reading went well.
Nope, never heard of Queen Cakes.
Buns as in currant buns? Or kind of like fairy cakes?
How did the dog reach the Queen Cakes?

Oh, just read the above. Fairy cakes then. Which have strangely mutated to cup cakes these days.

And utility rooms are posh. Even dirty ones. Especially dirty ones.

Domestic Oub said...

Oooh, how exciting, I'm posh :)

What's the difference between fairy cakes and currant buns? I'm afraid my bakery vocab leaves alot to be desired. I think all country houses have utility rooms, just to keep out the countryside. We are not posh.
(in this house)

(but our villa in spain... well... if it existed, it would be most grand)

1. Posh people always say they are not posh.
2. D'Oub is not, therefore, posh.
3. You, therefore, are.
4. Currant buns are what elephants eat. They are like Hot Cross buns without the cross, and bear no remeblance whatsoever to fairy cakes, which are like a slightly heavier Victoria Sponge mix in a little frilly cake case (like muffins come in, only smaller). The usual thing would then be to cut a little cone-y shape out of the top, put some icing in the hole, and then cut the cone-y shape of sponge in half and place them in the icing, to vaguely resemble small wings.
5. Never come to Scotland, where every bakery sells pan scones, potato scones, oven scones, crumpets, pancakes, etc. to infinity, none of which resemble anything in an English bakery except the oven scones.
6. I have too much work to do, so am procrastinating over here.

I'll repeat, in my true identity -

"Drat. There was me all excited for a mo. Sniffle. Am not posh :("
